West Ham axe Chris Woods and Gary Lewin as Manuel Pellegrini cuts backroom staff at London Stadium

WEST HAM have axed goalkeeping coach Chris Woods and physio Gery Lewin after Manuel Pellegrini ordered a major cull of his backroom team.

Pellegrini has wasted no time clearing the decks at the London Stadium just days after he was appointed the new Hammers manager.

The former Manchester City boss is planning a major overhaul behind the scenes after signing a three-year deal to succeed David Moyes in charge.

And his first act has been to sanction the departure of four people from the coaching and medical departments – with Woods and Lewin the highest profile casualties.

A West Ham spokesperson said: “West Ham United can today confirm a number of departures from the first team coaching and medical departments.

“Goalkeeping Coach Chris Woods, Head of Medical Services Gary Lewin, Club Doctor Ian Beasley and Head of Fitness Nick Davies have all left the Club with immediate effect.

“Following the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini as manager, a restructuring of the coaching and backroom staff is currently underway, with several new appointments set to be confirmed in due course.

“The Club would like to thank Chris, Gary, Ian and Nick for their excellent service and commitment.

“They leave with the Club’s gratitude and respect and West Ham United wish them all the very best in the future.
