And the England forward is expected to play a key role today as Pep Guardiola’s side look to inflict a damaging defeat on their rivals Manchester United.

His revival has come just months after Arsenal tried to sign him in part-exchange for unsettled Chilean Alexis Sanchez at the end of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners still retain a strong interest in taking the former Liverpool star to the Emirates, but since then Real Madrid have also emerged as potential suitors.

Yet though he has put contract talks with City on hold until next summer, Sterling insists he is not desperate to quit Manchester and has no intention of moving to London.

“But nobody knows what the future brings so one day, definitely, it would be nice to play abroad. It would be a great experience.

When City splashed out £43million to sign Bernardo Silva last summer there were some concerns Sterling would find his first team opportunities limited.

But he has responded by taking his game to a new level and fighting off the challenge of the former Monaco star.

Sterling added: “Bernardo Silva came in and that competition, stuff like that, spurs me into trying to do well, to get better.”
