Sterling has pulled out of England’s squad because of a lower back problem.

He was not fit enough to join the other 22 players – despite making an encouraging start in the Premier League this season.

City boss Pep Guardiola will be hoping that the 23-year-old is fit enough to face Fulham on September 15.

The 23-year-old would almost certainly have started Saturday’s Nations League clash with Spain at Wembley.

Fulham No1 Marcus Bettinelli has been called up to the England squad by boss Southgate.
